Winter on the Isle of Wight

Winter on the Isle of Wight

If you think the Isle of Wight is just for summer, then think again! Winter is the perfect time to visit the glorious garden isle.

There's Osborne House, where you can see just how the Victorians celebrated Christmas. You can enter into the festive spirit and hop aboard at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway where there are seasonal refreshments and a present for children with every ticket. Not forgetting Dinosaur Isle; Brading Roman Villa; Amazon World and Carisbrooke Castle, there's certainly plenty to see and do here during the cold winter months.

Dinosaur Isle is a must visit. The Isle of Wight is one of the top world sites for dinosaur fossil finds. The modern, lottery funded museum has the best of user friendly academic presentation and parents will love the robotic dinosaur! On a cold winters day you'll have the joy of being able to really relax and enjoy yourselves without battling through the peak season crowds. You can follow the time corridor, clipboards and quizzes in hand, back to the age of the dinosaurs and then enjoy the displays and games together as a family. Whatever you do please make time to visit the absolutely excellent education room upstairs. With painting, model making, colouring for little ones as well as an enchanting mat full of cuddly dinosaurs for babies, you will keep every member of the family happy up here. This place comes highly recommended! Check out the website or call the venue for information about their Fossil Walks, these fantastic and memorable walks are for all the family, even the very youngest fossil hunters!

Situated in York Avenue, East Cowes, you will find the majestic Osborne House. Queen Victoria fell in love with the island and built her family holiday home here. If you come in before Christmas prepare yourself for some serious Christmas tree envy as the house is decorated to create a perfect Victorian Christmas. You have to leave buggies when you tour the house but the staff were incredible helpful; they have slings for babies and hipsters for toddlers. There's a café by the entrance but if you want a real treat at the weekend book yourself a table (you really have to book in advance) in the stunning Terrace Restaurant. It's a world away from your usual historic house self service café; it's a stylish restaurant which is very happy to accommodate children. All in all this is a simply lovely day out and right at the car park, hidden behind the hedge is a fab play park to reward well-behaved children!

Winner of the Isle of Wight Tourism's 'Top Attraction' award and the 'Good Britain Guide' Top Family Attraction, Amazon World Zoo Park is a great winter day out for the whole family, you can thoroughly enjoy it whatever the weather! You and your family will be able to spot tropical birds, count the crocodiles and enjoy the 200 species of mammal, bird, reptile, insect, amphibian and fish in this simply stunning education and conservation centre.

Brading Villa's award-winning Exhibition and Visitor Centre offers a unique insight into Roman life in Britain. This family friendly exhibition space is packed with lots of great activities to really engage the children. You'll also find a café, shop and lovely grounds. The mosaic floors and extensive collection of Roman archaeology are cleverly presented to interest even the youngest little Roman fan.

The magnificent Carisbrooke Castle is a wonderful family day out which will leave you chatting for days about donkeys and arrow slits! There is so much to do and it is so perfectly set up for young children that you can easily spend an entire day here.

And you can of course enjoy all this while staying at Luccombe Hotels - Luccombe Manor Country House Hotel or Luccombe Hall Country House Hotel surrounded by cliff paths, coastal paths with stunning views. Just picture the roaring log fire at Luccombe Hall waiting for you when you feel ready to come in from the cold.

The hotels just happen to be set amongst almost 4 acres of landscaped clifftop gardens perched above the long sandy beach at Shanklin. The cliff steps lead you directly down to the picturesque setting of a winters day beach and is perfect ideal for that romantic stroll on the sandy beach below. If you love going away on holiday for wonderful views of the sea then Luccombe Hotels will exceed your every expectation with stunning sea views from the Lounge at Luccombe Manor, delicious dining and stunning seaviews in The Appley Restaurant at Luccombe Manor and the aptly named Grand View Restaurant at Luccombe Hall, and of course from the beautifully landscaped gardens as well as many seaview bedrooms in both hotels. You can also enjoy refreshments or a mouthwatering afternoon tea in the hotel lounges.

You can unwind in the beautiful lounge at Luccombe Manor and watch the boats pass by, relax in the hot tub or take a swim in the indoor pool at Luccombe Hall, enjoy a game of pool in the games rooms, enjoy the extensive garden facilities or, make use of the wide range of leisure facilities available in both hotels.
